Growing up can be both exciting and challenging for children and young people. As they navigate school, friendships, family relationships, and their developing sense of self, they often experience a wide range of emotions. At times, these experiences can feel overwhelming or difficult to manage alone, which is where children therapy can be beneficial.
Therapy offers a safe, supportive space where children and young people can begin to understand their feelings, express themselves more freely, and develop coping strategies to handle life’s challenges.
How therapy can help
Children and young people don’t always communicate their struggles through words. Often, their feelings may manifest through behavior, mood changes, or withdrawal.
Children therapy can support them to:
- Understand and express their emotions
- Build confidence and self-esteem
- Manage anxiety, worries, or low mood
- Navigate friendships and social challenges
- Cope with family changes such as separation or loss
- Develop healthier ways of responding to difficult situations
The aim is to help them feel heard, supported, and better able to manage their inner world.
Common difficulties include:
- Anxiety and worries
- Low mood or sadness
- Behavioral challenges
- School-related stress or avoidance
- Friendship difficulties
- Low confidence and self-esteem
- Anger or emotional outbursts
What to expect from sessions
Sessions are tailored to the age, personality, and needs of each child or young person. I offer a warm, non-judgmental space where they can feel safe to explore what is going on for them.
Depending on their age, sessions may include:
- Talking and reflection
- Creative approaches such as drawing or storytelling
- Play-based techniques
- Gentle exploration of thoughts and feelings
- Developing practical coping strategies through mental health support
There is no pressure to talk before they feel ready—building trust and safety is always the starting point.
Working with parents and carers
Where appropriate, I work alongside parents and carers to support the child or young person’s wellbeing through young people counselling. This may involve offering guidance, sharing insights, and helping to create a supportive environment at home.
At the same time, it is important that the young person has a space that feels their own, where they can speak openly and build a trusting therapeutic relationship.
A supportive and individual approach
Every child and young person is unique, and therapy is always adapted to suit their needs and pace. My approach is warm, relational, and grounded in understanding, helping young people to feel more secure, confident, and emotionally supported.
